Case Study: Hawke's Bay Regional Council and MPI Drought web app
We partnered with Hawke's Bay Regional Council and MPI to design and build an intuitive drought monitoring web app. With drought conditions being a critical concern for the region, the app provides real-time data to help farmers make early decisions and inform their planning.
Hawke's Bay Regional Council approached WebShed to develop a solution that would help farmers during long, dry summers. They wanted to create a web app that would provide farmers with real-time data on drought conditions, including rainfall levels, water availability, and soil moisture. The app empowers farmers to stay informed and make timely decisions to manage dry conditions more effectively.
The stand-out features:
The drought app includes these useful key features:
- Mobile Access
Farmers can access the web app on a mobile device or larger screens, ensuring they have the data they need during dry conditions. - Location-Based
The app detects your location and provides a dry risk indicator for your farm. - Real-Time Data
Access live data on rainfall, soil moisture, and water availability from 50 rainfall sites and climate stations across the region, helping you monitor conditions and stay informed on approaching watch or warning levels. - Real-Time Risk Alerts
Easily check if you’re approaching a watch or warning level, allowing for timely decisions and proactive action. - Data Exploration
Farmers can dig deeper into the data using graphs on soil moisture, rainfall, temperature, and PET, comparing year on year.
The benefits:
The drought app has greatly improved the farming community’s ability to monitor and respond to drought conditions, enabling them to manage their farms and livestock more effectively. Since the app's launch, we've refined the interface based on farmer feedback, providing them with the insights they need to protect their livelihoods.
